Some time ago, we reported on the unworthy living conditions in which the extended Malaji family lives.
The family lived in a 3×3 meter shed. The employees of the Ndlovu Care Group became aware of the family and intervened immediately.
The shed in which the family lived was renovated. Just the addition of windows, an extra room, a hallway and much more now mean so much more quality of life for the family. In addition, they have been integrated into the Ndlovu Care Group programs, which means that they now receive regular food, medical care and other survival essentials that the family was previously deprived of.
In the meantime, Ndlovu is doing everything he can to move the family into a safe, permanent building before the cold season arrives. A house that can also offer protection in the rainy season. Previously, the shed would fill up and flood the floor. The family’s few possessions became wet and often unusable. There were hardly any ways to store things safely in the hut. In addition, there is a watering hole in the immediate vicinity and the nearest school is miles away. The family had no income to improve their situation.
First of all, a location had to be found. A place for the new building had to be found as close as possible to the Ndlovu Bloempoort Campus. This would ensure that the family would be within walking distance of the nutrition unit, preschool and other services offered by the Ndlovu Care Group, in particular the campus water supply points. After negotiations with the local city council, a plot of land was secured.
Now the search for building materials began. With the remnants of previous building projects, enough was finally gathered to build a sturdy little hut – with a living room, bedrooms, enough windows to guarantee sufficient ventilation and even a canopy. The outdoor toilet is an unexpected luxury for a family that had never had anything like it before. Thanks to the support of the Ndlovu Child Care Program, but also the personal involvement of the social workers and the family’s life coach, the small house could be equipped with furniture and other necessities.
Many thanks to all those involved who have helped to alleviate the misery of this family.
