The children of Bloempoort

During our last visit in November, we also visited the Minicampus in Bloempoort. In addition to preschool and toddler care and sports facilities, the children’s center also includes a feeding station with a large kitchen garden. In the feeding station, malnourished children are regularly provided with the most essential nutrients. Precise records are kept of who came to visit for the first time and at what weight. Within a very short time, the babies reach normal weight. Mothers are shown what is important. What they can do at home to ensure a healthy diet. As many are unable to provide their children with basic nutrition from their own resources, the Minicampus in Bloempoort is a regular meeting place for mothers with babies and toddlers. This program is not just for the benefit of the children. The mothers also receive meals here and the place is a social meeting point.

The Ndlovu Care Group is using this to launch educational programs – most recently the importance of vaccination in the fight against the coronavirus. Like us in Germany, South Africa has its doubters. In the fight against uncertainty, prejudice and fear, only education, regular discussion, openness to concerns and offers of support can help.

Togetherness in games and sport

We visited two classes. All the children wanted to show what they could do. While the older children in the preschool are learning to spell, the younger ones focus on active play. We observed that great importance is attached to community development and respect. Everyone is clapped when they have completed their task. If it is particularly challenging for one child and they need more time than others, they still wait, cheer and applaud. The focus is on joint development.

Hygiene measures against corona are omnipresent

The hygiene measures are being implemented in an exemplary manner. In closed rooms, the children all wore masks and kept their distance – certainly not an easy situation. But the children are happy that the Ndlovu Care Group’s programs have resumed after the lockdown and that they can now visit this place regularly again.

To keep it that way, we ask for your help. The programs of the Ndlovu Care Group are aimed at the poorest. They receive help and support without having to pay for it. We are asking for financial support so that all these children can continue to be offered this opportunity. This can only happen with our help.
