With the support of the RTL Foundation: We help children
Vegetable gardens Foodgardens
The Covid-19 restriction measures that came into force worldwide dramatically worsened the situation in the poor townships of South Africa. The looming food crisis seemed more threatening than the pandemic itself.
The vegetable garden program not only plays a key role in improving the quantity, quality, variety and nutritional content of food, but also in securing the livelihoods of more than 11,000 people in the communities around Moutse.
The Hugo Tempelman Foundation supported the Ndlovu Care Group in setting up vegetable gardens for households in the area. The plants were grown in seedling farms and passed on to the families. At the same time, they were taught the skills and abilities to cultivate these gardens, which are designed to minimize water consumption, independently and to use them profitably. The families also received gardening tools and water tank wheelbarrows.
The RTL: Wir helfen Kindern foundation is providing financial support for the construction of a further 750 gardens.

The gardens are not just for self-sufficiency. They bring purpose and structure to people’s everyday lives. Prosperous gardens have an external impact and encourage the neighborhood to do the same.
The project is an important building block in helping people to help themselves.

“The RTL telethon is just one of the highlights of our aid efforts. For us, the whole year is dedicated to helping children in need. Thanks to the close and trusting cooperation with partner organizations like yours, we can guarantee that every euro donated arrives where it is urgently needed without a cent being deducted – with the children in need. We look forward to working with you on further projects,” says Wolfram Kons, Head of Charity RTL.
