Rachel – From choir singer to nurse

Rachel Ntobeng was the lead singer of the Ndlovu Youth Choir until she began her training as a nurse. She has now successfully completed her training. A short interview:

You have successfully completed your studies. Congratulations! Did you enjoy it?

Yes, very much – I’ve always wanted to be a nurse. From next year, I will be a registered nurse. In the 6 months in between, I will be honing my computer skills. As soon as I have finished the required two years as a registered nurse, I will become a nurse and then I would like to train as a midwife.

How has your life changed since joining the Ndlovu Youth Choir?
My life has changed completely. Before, it was aimless and boring – and suddenly I had something wonderful to look forward to. Ralf, our choirmaster, inspires me. When I first started, people said I would neglect my school work. But Ralf explained to me that I should concentrate on my goals and that I should focus on what I wanted for myself. He also taught me that there are many more aspects to music than just singing. He opened up a new world of music for me. I learned a lot from him!

Do you have a message for the young people who, like you, grow up in Elandsdoorn?
Yes, I have. Study hard and diligently. Don’t give up because of your background, that’s no excuse. Stay away from drugs, don’t get pregnant. Education is the answer! Concentrate. With education, all doors will open for you.
