December 5 marks the first anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s death. We would like to commemorate the former president of South Africa and indomitable anti-apartheid fighter.
The film about his life and work, “Mandela – The Long Road to Freedom”, celebrated its cinema premiere in Germany in January 2014 – shortly after Mandela’s death. Helge Sasse, then CEO of Senator Entertainment and Deputy Chairman of the Hugo Tempelman Foundation, initiated a charity gala on the eve of the premiere to mark the occasion. The proceeds from this event went to the Hugo Tempelman Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.
The evening was well attended. Various celebrities from show and politics supported the campaign: in addition to Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Claudia Roth and Dr. Anton Hofreiter, Armin Mueller-Stahl and the leading actor Idris Elba were also present. Johannes B. Kerner, who hosted the event without a fee, was accompanied musically by Katie Melua, who also waived her fee in favor of the foundations. Mandela’s daughter Zindzi was also present on behalf of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.
