NORAST study

Ndlovu is expanding its research projects into a new field and launching a new study – NORAST (Ndlovu ORAquick Self-Test). The applicability of the HIV test for home use is being investigated. Using a saliva test, anyone can now carry out an “AIDS” test themselves within 30 minutes. The self-test is intended to help provide clarity about one’s own risk of infection and that of the other person quickly and without a visit to the doctor. Here in rural areas, this can certainly be seen as a precautionary measure before sexual intercourse. This test was approved in the USA in 2012 and has been used ever since. In order to carry out the rapid test, the person concerned must collect oral saliva using a swab. The swab is then placed in a tube containing a solution. The result is visible after half an hour. However, when the self-test was launched on the market, manufacturers initially had some concerns. Above all, they were skeptical about leaving the consumer alone with the test and the possible result – without medical support. The NORAST study by the Ndlovu Care Group is intended to provide an overview of the extent to which people can understand and successfully carry out the illustrated oral rapid test themselves without personal guidance.
