New educational opportunity for children with disabilities in Elandsdoorn

Since 2018, the Ndlovu Care Group has been increasingly involved in the rehabilitation of children and young people with disabilities. Around 50 children and young people are now included in the program. The disabilities range from minor intellectual impairments to severely physically and mentally disabled children with cerebral palsy.

In addition to physical support, there are also various training opportunities such as a sewing workshop or a bead weaving workshop for making traditional jewelry. The latest addition is a new upholstery workshop where young people can learn the craft of upholstery.

The stigmatization of families of disabled children/young people is a problem that prevents appropriate care and vocational training. Disabled children and young people are often hidden away in the home. Vocational education and training for them is neglected and leads to a lifelong dependence on family care.

Hugo Tempelman was confronted with a similar stigmatization when he came to Elandsdoorn in South Africa more than 25 years ago. At that time, it concerned people infected with HIV/AIDS. Through his tireless work in this area – not only treatment, but above all education – a change in thinking has taken place in the community. Nowadays, no one is excluded because of HIV/AIDS. And people with disabilities should also become an integrated part of society – that is the declared goal.

The possibility of independent work and employment is an important first step in this direction.
