At the Ndlovu Medical Center, the heart of the activities in Elandsdoorn, more than 2,500 HIV and tuberculosis patients receive long-term care – regardless of whether they have health insurance.
Dutch and South African doctors work hand in hand here; the majority of their HIV patients succeed in bringing the virus below the detection limit. The local doctors cooperate with universities in the Netherlands and America and the Max Planck Institute for Immunology in Berlin. Using modern telemedicine, experts from all over the world can be consulted if necessary.
Another important aspect in Ndlovu is tuberculosis prevention. Hugo Tempelman’s team was able to become the first non-governmental organization in South Africa to receive an official contract with the government for tuberculosis prevention.
