International Day of Persons with Disabilities

December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Awareness of the problems faced by people with disabilities is always present in the projects of the Hugo Tempelman Foundation.

At the end of November – before Omikron started to keep the world on tenterhooks – some of the foundation’s representatives were back on site after a long time. The help we have provided here so far has been targeted and effective. There are so many children who have received help, support and encouragement as part of the project.

We heard stories that popular beliefs in witch curses and punishment often make the lives of handicapped children unworthy. As “not the chosen child”, they are often still hidden away in families and treated as a burden.

Education, services, support, help – the Ndlovu Care Group offers all of this with the help of the Hugo Tempelman Foundation. Families can take advantage of the care services on a regular basis. However, due to the strict hygiene measures, the groups have been divided so that there are fewer children in one group, but they can only come to care every other day.

The program also includes home visits and teaching parents how to deal with their children. There is also a focus on healthy nutrition for the children. Together with the NGO’s social workers, vegetable gardens are planted in the families’ homes and the members are taught how to care for the plants.

It is so important to continue this work. The treatment of the children is free of charge for the families and is supported by donations to the NGO. Last year, the coronavirus situation meant that not as much funding could be activated, while at the same time huge cuts had to be made due to the lockdown.

For this reason, only one of the two available care centers could be put back into operation. We are making every effort to reopen the second center.

Continuity is important here. It is difficult to bear the disappointment of the children if the gates have to be kept closed due to financial shortfalls because there is no money for staff, for example.
