Imbizo on drinking water – Let’s talk about water …

March is Humanitarian Rights Month in South Africa. In this context, an Imbizo was held on March 18 at the Miracle Theater on the topic of “Provision of drinking water”. An Imbizo is a traditional gathering of community members. General problems and issues are discussed here on a large scale. 51 community members turned up to discuss the current situation regarding the provision of drinking water with representatives of the Ndlovu Care Group. Since 2001, the Ndlovu Care Group has constructed 53 drinking water points including water tanks, pumps and taps. These wells are freely available to all members of the community. The funds for these boreholes were raised from private donors.

In areas without a power supply, Ndlovu provides solar-powered pumps. These are very expensive and are unfortunately often stolen. The wells are the responsibility of the communities and are managed by them. Often, however, the necessary repair and maintenance costs cannot be covered by the municipal budget. In these cases, the Ndlovu Care Group steps in and provides financial support.

Two community members from Thabakhubedu and Ntwane reported on their successful methods. The general challenges were discussed and how Ndlovu can support all 47 borehole managers so that they can act independently and efficiently.
