“Flying for Freedom” is the official song for the celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Berlin Airlift. It was composed and produced by the Airlift Berlin project, consisting of composer Ted Rain and lyricist Tex Checker. They were able to win the Berlin musician Daniel de la Fuente as a singer. The backing choir in the verses and chorus was recorded in South Africa with the Ndlovu Youth Choir.
“Flying for freedom” recordings in our own recording studio in Elandsdoorn
The young people have been working on the recordings in the recording studio in Elandsdoorn for months. The recording studio was set up on site thanks to a generous donation from the Thomann company through the Hugo Tempelman Foundation.
Airlift festival to mark the blockade in Berlin 70 years ago
Yesterday, May 12, Berlin commemorated the end of the Soviet blockade 70 years ago with the “Festival of the Airlift”. This is why 50,000 visitors came to Tempelhofer Feld to see historical vehicles, photos and everyday objects from that time. The blockade lasted 11 months in 1948/49 and over 2.1 million tons of goods were flown in on 230,000 flights.
The miracle of solidarity
In her speech, Justice Minister Katarina Barley (SPD) said: “This airlift has made the impossible possible.” Only solidarity had made this “miracle” possible.
The work of the Hugo Tempelman Foundation, which supports the Ndlovu Youth Choir, is also only possible thanks to the “miracle of solidarity”. Only through donations and sponsors is it possible to maintain the charitable work in South Africa.
