A brilliant evening at the South African Embassy in Berlin

On Monday evening, the South African ambassador and the Hugo Tempelman Foundation welcomed not only around 200 invited guests, but also a special visitor from South Africa. Hugo and Liesje Tempelman are in Berlin for a week, accompanied by the magnificent Ndlovu Youth Choir.
Cherno Jobatey hosted the evening in a relaxed and very friendly manner. The discussion with Hugo and Liesje and Dieter Haller, the former ambassador to South Africa and current head of the economic department of the Federal Foreign Office, was not only extremely competent, but also very vivid and personal. During the discussion, Liesje Tempelman talked about her first experiences in Africa: when they went to work in the morning, the young people would sit on street corners and when they returned home in the evening, the young people would still be sitting there. Hugo and Liesje wondered if there wasn’t something they could give the children that would be worth leaving that corner for.
Over the years, this idea gave rise to the Miracle Theater – the home of the choir. But also Chill Hub Haus, where children and young people can do sports, read, play, work on the computer, spend meaningful time together, everything is based on this idea.

If you want to see more: Hugo is a guest on the RBB live magazine zibb tonight. Simply tune in

Cherno Jobatey, who thankfully hosted the evening pro bono, entertained the audience very engagingly and gave the choir’s performance the stage it deserved: No guest remained in their seat during the young singers’ performance! The African rhythms, the singing and dancing completely enthralled the audience. The young people deservedly earned great applause and admiration from all sides. The joy they took in their art was palpable and spread directly to the audience.

This whole wonderful evening would not have been possible without the energetic and financial support of our sponsors. We would like to thank Daimler, without whose help we would not have been able to realize an evening like this. The Berlin Chameleon Theater is supporting the choir’s stay throughout the week: on Wednesday, for example, everyone is invited to the evening event. And of course we would like to thank Energetix, whose board members were all personally present that evening.

The choir will be in Berlin for the rest of the week. We will continue to report.
