The Ndlovu Wits Audiology Clinic started a hearing screening program for first grade students aged 5 to 6 in mid-April. To date – with the help of trained volunteers – around 300 children have been tested.
Children with undiagnosed hearing impairments find it particularly difficult to cope at school. In addition to their already difficult life circumstances, they cannot follow communication in class, which over time not only leads to learning delays, but also to frustration, as the child believes that they are too stupid to follow the lessons. Early detection of hearing impairment or even hearing loss can prevent these sometimes traumatic experiences. Children with suspected hearing impairment are tested at the Ndlovu Wits Audiology Clinic. If an impairment is diagnosed, they will be transferred to their nearest clinic for treatment. The Audiology Clinic also conducts newborn screenings. And they are committed to training members of the community. In addition, the Ndlovu Wits Audiology Clinic is actively engaged in a research program, collecting data that will demonstrate the need to include audiology services as part of integrated care.
